Our Process

Focus and and fulfill the terms of agreement

The Process

Darrin is a member of the Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario (FDRIO). We follow the protocols of this well regarded institute. The process starts with a pre-mediation meeting where both parties meet with Rachel individually to ask questions and prepare for the information gathering stage.  Then, Lauren works with the parties to gather up a great deal of information e.g. financials, details, dates of birth etc. Rachel and Lauren then create a mediation brief and draft documentation for Darrin. That way, Darrin and the parties can ‘hit the ground running’ at the first mediation session. That is a very heavy session where all of the outstanding legal issues are discussed, along with any issues that the parties want to discuss. Then, after that meeting Darrin sends an email to Rachel and Lauren to draft a separation agreement. Rachel takes Darrin’s two or three page summary email and turns it into a 25 page separation agreement. It is fortunate that Darrin and Rachel have been together so long that they basically have the same brain as this assists with this step. The second meeting typically involves Darrin and the parties going over any remaining items, going through the draft agreement, making any necessary changes.  The focus then moves to signing and fulfilling the terms of the agreement.

The end game - A Separation Agreement - ensure it is part of the process you pick

There are two steps to any family law file. First, agreeing to a deal. Second, writing up the deal. They are two very distinct steps.
